The effects of elder abuse are having a serious and devastating impact on a growing number of individuals. Too often, inaccurate perceptions about prevalence, aging, victims, perpetrators and the dynamics of elder abuse lead to inappropriate or ineffective responses, putting victims at a higher risk of harm. To improve the response of senior citizens and service providers, the Coalition, in collaboration with LifeCare Alliance and the American Association of Service Coordinators has provided training, education and resources to nearly 200 service coordinators, staff and volunteers on elder abuse. We hope to expand these training opportunities to other agencies throughout central Ohio that serve the elderly. With this initiative, our goal is to raise awareness about elder abuse, and provide education about warning signs and available resources. In 2000, the Coalition provided funding for the Family Violence and Elderly educational campaign of The Ohio State University Extension of Franklin County. The initiative reached over 7,000 senior citizens and service providers.
