In partnership with Columbus City Schools, the Coalition created a family violence prevention program to respond to the connection between children’s inability to learn and violence in the home. The Coalition began this initiative in 2005 with four schools. Currently, we are in eleven schools. The initiative uses a four-pronged approach: training and education for school staff; development and implementation of a school-wide violence prevention program; parent outreach and education sessions; and support from social workers to help children and their families. To date, nearly 700 families experiencing family violence have been served by our social workers; nearly 700 staff members received a presentation about domestic violence and its effect on children; and nearly 750 parents have received parenting education. For more information about this initiative and a list of participating schools, please write to us.
