Numerous studies have shown linkages between children's readiness to learn (or, conversely, an inability to learn due to outside factors such as the presence of violence in the home) and academic performance. The fact that a child's school serves as a consistent point of contact for a child outside of his or her home, provides a compelling case for school personnel's involvement. The Coalition continues to partner with central Ohio schools to create family violence prevention and intervention activities to assist school personnel. Over the past year, outreach and education efforts have not only included students, parents and school personnel but we have also involved school-based mentors and afterschool providers reaching nearly 300 participants. From 2005-2010, in partnership with Columbus City Schools, the Coalition created a family violence prevention program to respond to the connection between children's inability to learn and violence in the home.
